Vegas Can't see my camera !!!!

paulwilko wrote on 9/15/2004, 12:30 PM
Hello, just got my Vegas 5 and cannot capture anything.

I am getting the message The device 'Microsoft DV Camera and VCR' Could not be opened, please make sure it is turned and not being used by another user.

I get this as soon as i try to capture video.

My pc can see my camera because other programs work.

Any advice please, i am desperate to get going.

Thanks

Paul

What camera do you have and how are you connecting it (USB or Firewire)?
paulwilko wrote on 9/15/2004, 12:45 PM
It is a canon 450i and am connecting Firewire.

When in video capture, in the tabs at the top, Audio shows my soundcard with a black dot next to it but on Video it shows Microsoft Dv and VCR without the dot.

Does this help at all

Thanks

Paul

In the Vegas preferences under the Video Device Tab is the device set to OHCI Compliant IEEE 1394/DV?
paulwilko wrote on 9/15/2004, 1:05 PM
Yes it is

Just a thought, does it matter that i have Pinnacle installed on my pc. Are there likely to be any conflicts ??
Jsnkc wrote on 9/15/2004, 1:23 PM
It's possible, especially if they are running at the same time.

This is doing myhead in.

Okay that didn;t work.

I have Vegas and Pinnacle studio. Both these programs cannot see my camera
Pinnacle always used to be able to.

Windows movie maker can.

Does this sound like i may need a driver because i have just upgraded to XP service pack 2.

Windows movie maker can see my camera, but as soon as it goes to capture, it falls down.

This definately seems a windows issue.

Any more thoughts please

Just a thought, do you have any other firewire devices connected to the PC?
PDB wrote on 9/16/2004, 7:13 AM
Could this be an anti-virus /firewall issue? or that the computer has firewire/usb devices blocked (admin stuff...as in my work PC)?
KimberlyK wrote on 9/16/2004, 9:17 AM
First, while the camera is plugged in via firewire, right click on MyComputer and select Properties. Then click on the Hardware tab and the Device Manager button. Locate your camera in the Device Manager (Note: not the OHCI capture card, the camera itself under imaging). Right click on the camera and select Uninstall. Disconnect the camera from the computer and uninstall Vegas using the Add Remove Programs utility in the control panel.
After doing so, go into the hard drive that Vegas was installed on (C is the default) and into the Program Files folder. Then go into the Sony folder and delete the Vegas folder. Then re-install the latest version of Vegas from our updates page located under the downloads section of the site. After doing so, open VideoCapture, connect the camera and follow through with the camera setup dialog that appears. Then go into the Options menu in VideoCapture, select reconnect to current device and try capturing again.

Okay thx, I will try this tonight.

I am sure I have done this. I had a look at the updates on the website and I believe i am already running build 160.
Are there any differences in the website one ?

It seems strange though that all of a sudden none of my video editing suites are working ?? Which leads me to believe it is a windows problem.

Anyway i will try it

Thx for the reply

Paul,
Did you install SP2 and are capturing in PAL? For me Vegas capture worked fine until I installed SP2. I checked it with several devices (Sony DHR-1000 & several Sony cameras) and also tried to capture in Movie Maker but nothing worked anymore. After a search on the net I found that the msdv.sys-file was changed in SP2 which causes the capture problems.

You can read the details in the following thread on the Movie Maker forum:

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/expertzone/newsgroups/reader.mspx?dg=microsoft.public.windowsxp.moviemaker&tid=76b359b0-c742-41db-9f16-86299cace816

See the second reply from Kristen Miller (Microsoft). I followed the instructions and since then capture works as before.

Hope it helps...

I tried the above, but 2 of the directories mentioned could not be found

Any other ideas ?
Stany wrote on 9/22/2004, 11:56 AM
In my case the 2 directories (Windows\system32\dllcache\ & Windows\LastGood\System32\Drivers
were also missing but nevertheless it works fine now. Did you rename the SP2.CAB-file in Windows\Driver Cache\i386 before rebooting and connecting the camera/recorder again?
If I know something more I will post it here.

KimberlyK-

I am just curious, if you have the potential answer and are (presumably) looking at it why would you not give a direct link? When people are having a problem and your job is to help - why would you not expedite that process and make it as simple as possible?

Thank you JOHN MEYER for the answer.

I fixed that same problem, I can't remember the cause, I think it had something to do with divx? The way i found the solution was I did a search on google
using the words from the problem "The device 'Microsoft DV Camera and VCR' Could not be opened" and found the fix. I think I had to go to
microsoft and download a file and it worked!

I really hope this helps you.

I had the same problem ,everything was fine until I installed vegas 5, I couldn't capture video in vegas,, the problem was bandwidth related,, not enough on my laptop,, my tascam 428 was the culprit ,,It's a usb device,, I had to un plug the tascam usb line or turn off the tascam in order to capture video,,,who's to say is at fault ,,tascam or vegas? , it doesn't matter because on my other laptop I can capture video with vegas while my tascam is running......
