What are you attempting to do, exactly?
If the Video has MPG-1 layer 2 sound, which is probably the case, you are going to take a huge quality hit if you attempt to encodethis as Dolby Digital.
What has to happen for this to work is this.
Uncompress from MPG audio to PCM, re encode as Dolby Digital.
So what is going on is you are unpacking a lossy compressed codec into WAV, with all the missing frequencies still missing, then attempting to re encode to yet another lossy format?
Why?

You cannot incorporate Dolby Digital (AC3) into DivX.
Or Xvid.
It multiplexes into MPEG-2, not this other format.
Sorry.

PCM to Dolby Digital is easy - all you need is a Dolby Digital Encoder.

Can you explain just what you have, and what you are trying to do?
Going from one compressed format to another is going to drop the quality - noticeably.

Wilkes - you are wrong, you can multiplex ac3 into DiVX and XVID and many other types of avi files -- even DV ....

just create the two files (avi type X and ac3) and multiplex them together in virtualdub ...

btw -- vegas is not the best xvid encoder as it does not handle 2 pass xvid encoding ...
