Computer Lock-up and Capture failure?

I have had this problem occur very randomly, but so far have not been able to trace it to a known source. On occasion when I am capturing a tape, or short video clip, my computer will lock up and either play an unending steady tone from the PC speaker, or it will garble the audio coming from the camcorder and repeat it over and over. A hard-reboot of the machine is required, but when I go and look at the captured file, the clip is really short. For instance, if my computer locks up at a 20:00 capture mark, I've only got like 4-5 minutes of captured footage. Shouldn't it end about the same time my PC locks? And why does it lock up? I usually can capture fine without problems, but it does this every so often. I haven't been able to trace it for a solution!

Don't know, suspect that something in operating system starts a task while your capturing and the computer can't handle doing everything. Normally a capture should end at the point your computer freezes, but possibly, back ground task is so demanding that recording stops earlier. This is only a guess. Probably need more details about your computer and capturing methods for anybody here to be able to figure it out.

4-5 minutes sounds suspiciously like a 1 gig limit. about 20 minutes sounds suspiciously like a 4 gig limit.

Here's my system specs and how I capture; maybe someone has run into this before:

Windows XP Pro w/SP1
AMD Athlon 2500+
1 GB Crucial Memory
3 hard drives; 1 for O/S, other for video capture/storage
Sound Blaster Audigy 2 Platinum
WinFast PVR100 capture card

I usually capture via my FireWire port, which is on my Platinum drive bay. It's a standalone system, not connected to the internet at all, so I don't have any virus scanning running. No other programs run in the background except IntelliPoint/IntelliType program for button assignments. It is connected to a home network; should I disable that when capturing? Other than that nothing else runs while Vegas is capturing. I use VidCap 4.0 (Vegas 4.0d) for all my video captures. It's very intermittent, though. Sometimes I can capture whole tapes fine, other times it just won't. It's very confusing! Feedback is appreciated!

I'm aware of the FAT32 issue; but all my drives are formatted with NTFS. One is a Maxtor DiamondMax Plus 9 120GB which is my primary drive, my other backup is an IBM Desktar 80GB. The Maxtor is on the Primary IDE channel, set as Slave. The IBM is on my RAID 0 array.

I have to admit, I'm stumped. I'm assuming this has happened when capturing through your firewire port. (I also use my AudPlat2 firewire port, but no problems.) The WinFast PVR100 capture card, I know nothing about. Is this an S-video/composite input card? To be honest, everything you described sounds pretty good to me. Possibly an overheating problem???? Something sounds like it must be 'corrupted'. I also vaguely thought I heard something about XP home being preferred to Pro, but I can't remember why. (I'm still on ME, and it all works. I have literally everything, except 'systray' and 'explorer', turned off) I also turn off all USB connected devices. Almost everytime I shut down Vegas, I notice that 'Winmgnt' is running and I have to manually shut it off. I don't even know what it does, but it seems to slow things down a bit. The only suspicious piece of equipment you have is WinFast PVR100, and it's only suspicious because I know nothing about it and maybe it has some capturing issues?????? Sorry. I also am still using 4.0c .
