OT: Burner won't close after burn with DVDA2 (but will otherwise)

Randy Brown wrote on 7/28/2004, 11:45 AM
Sorry to bring this over here but I'm not getting a response from the DVDA forum:
I'm guessing this has something to do with DVDA 2 since my Sony DRU 500 will open and close fine until after a burn. I have to restart to make it close again. Any thoughts?
TIA,
Randy

Me too! Same burner, latest firmware update. I had the same issue with DVD A1 too though. It's one of the reasons I author in DVDA, but burn with something else.

So dvdude, were you using the latest firmware (2.1a) with DVDA 1 also? I never had the problem with DVDA 1 and just wondering if the problem could be the new firmware.
Thanks,
Randy

Hey, I have the same issue with a Sony 510A burner. That is weird. Watching this string for a fix. Also checking for updates to the burner.

Ditto!

I was thinking it was me and the pc.

It will open, I will gently "push" to close and it wont "automatically" reset as with other progs. I can play CDs and I can read and write to this device as for DATA backups - But when I burn DVDA2 stuff .. nope! Now I haven't tried with the latest DVDA2a to check if this HAS been improved. And yes, I need to re-boot to get the drawer to slide back in.

Sony ± R . .. hmmmm .. . :-(

Well after giving up on the DVDA forum, Greg posted the following over there:

>>"This recently started happening with my Sony DRU500 too (after upgrading it to the latest firmware - 2.1a - I'm using DVD1 though - not 2.)
I find if I right click on the DVD drive in explorer, and select eject, the drive will then close correctly when I press the button.

Greg"<<

It sounds to me like DVDA ( 1 and 2) and the latest Sony DRU firmware (2.1a) don't get along. I'll be curious to try Greg's suggestion (close with "eject" in Explorer) after my next burn.
So should we report the "problem" to Sony hardware or Sony software? : )

It's ALWAYS done this me with DVDA1, i have yet to complete a project with DVDA2...although i am about to and was hoping that it was fixed. Sounds like its still a bug with these sony burners. BUMMER!

What a Royal Pain in the Arse this problem is, sorry to hear that it still lingers.

I'll try the explorer trick. Much better than a reboot. That said, burning with RecordNow seems to be a little quicker for some reason though the resulting disks seem to be identical.

It's just not that big of a deal for me.

Oh, g_randybrown, yeah, I think it started when I downloaded the update I needed for 4x DVD-R burns. I've kept on top of the updates since but the problem hasn't gone away yet. I don't know how long I can expect Sony to continue active support for this burner. I'm considering upgrading to something faster but I'm loathe to do that as my current output seems to be highly compatible with many different DVD players, provided I don't use VBR anyway.

For those interested, Sony Dave is on the case over at The DVDA Forum.
Perhaps we should move this over there now.

All,
Looks like this is a DVDA-2 problem (maybe -1 problem too) that might be specific to Sony DVD writers. My workaround is to fire-up Record Now DVX (any writer will probably do) and close the tray with that. It's a workaround to avoid reboot until this bug is fixed. I'm wondering if it's just with Sony DVD writers that this is happening.

I'VE HAD THIS PROBLEM ALSO, SAME SONY DRIVE, BUT [RECORD NOW) WAS THE CULPRIT. TRY THIS. RIGHT CLICK ON THE DRIVE YOU'RE USING. IN THE DROPDOWN LIST, CLICK ON EJECT. NOW , PUSH THE BUTTON ON THE DRIVE. IT SHOULD CLOSE.

THIS HAVE WORKED FOR ME IN THE PAST. POST BACK AND LET ME KNOW IF IT WORKS FOR YOU.

GOOD LUCK,

Although I author in DVDA, and have a Sony burner too, I use nero for burning vs burning from within DVDA -- try using nero, works great..
