Subject:ac3 vs mpeg

I am working on a project that will require me to create about 20 DVD's for 20 different people. Everyone has a different audio/video setup. What would be the best way to encode the audio in order to give the best compatibility? Does ac3 still work if you use the analog ouputs (mixdown) of a DVD player, or does ac3 only function through the coax or optical out? If the file is encoded in mpeg, will this play through the analog outs? Thanks.

You will have no problems using AC3, it is the default standard of DVD and compatible with all players. MPEG audio is not.
