Creating a Marquee

pmags22 wrote on 4/6/2004, 5:43 AM
Does anyone know how to create a Marquee in Vegas? I want to run text accross the bottom of the screen from right to left. I don't want it scrolling upwards... and I want to be able to put in text about a papagragh long. I can't figure out how to do it. I just want it running across the screen at one steady speed. If anyone is able to help me out with this please post. Thanks

Yes, it's quite easy. Type all the text you want in the standard Text Generator as one long line. Adjust the duration of the event to however long you want it to last. Then click on the Placement tab and move the text all the way off the right of the screen. Set a new keyframe at the end of the event and move the text all the way off the left of the screen. It will now scroll smoothly from right to left through the duration of the event.

Sounds pretty simple how do I set a new keyframe?

Just click at the end of the timeline in the text generated media window, move the text to the new position and it will be automatically created.

I understand the idea of the whole thing but when I go to your link it says to add a keyframe... I can't find this icon to click anywhere.

I found it... thanks :)

That's easy enough, but how about making it repeat, like a marquee on CNN where it just keeps going by over and over?

> but how about making it repeat

You need to place it on two tracks where the tail end of one marquee follows the beginning of the other (i.e., events offset from each other not end to end). You don’t even have to copy the media, just make it point to the original.

OK, that went way over my head,,, I want the same thing to keep repeating for the duration of the video,,, just like on CNN or Fox News,, does that make it more clear?

Mike,
Do you want the same text to scroll past all the time? Copy the first text event you made and paste it down along the timeline as many times as you want. You'll get the option to choose new copy or reference to original. The latter will update automatically if you change the original.
If you want to change the text, copy the event as new copy, change the text. If you then want a number of different texts to repeat, mark all of them and copy.

I see how you did it Hunter, but how did you make it repeat?

Mike, it seems you're missing a basic concept of Vegas. Any event can be extended by simply dragging its right edge.

1. Use the Veg file given. Open it, replace the text with what YOU want.
2. Drag its edge right.

That's all you got to do. It will loop (repeat) as far as you drag it.

thanks billyboy,,, I thought extending it would just make it make the text scroll by slower, didn't know it would repeat it!!

Sorry if I wasn’t clear. It’s probably easier to show you than explain. Download this veggie file and see what I mean: LongTextFeed.veg.

The example Hunter showed you leaves the left side of the screen and then enters back in the right with a whole blank screen in between every time it loops. If that’s what you want then use his. What I was recommending was that you stagger the same message on two tracks so that it immediately follows itself with no blanks. (i.e., a "continuous" feed of text like CNN)
