Will not play in brand new DVD player? Is this a flaw in DVD architect?

pmags22 wrote on 5/15/2004, 9:26 AM
Just wondering if anyone has come across problems with playing video's they created with Vegas and created the dvd menu's and so forth with dvd architect. They work on probably 50% of the players I use them in. Is it the media I use. I'm using fuji -R DVD's. Is there a setting when I create the dvd in DVD architect that I can change to prevent this problem? I'm doing Wedding Videography and this can be a pretty serious problem... so far its been ok... but is there anyone who knows how to possibly correct this problem? Would Upgrading to Vegas5 + DVD solve my problem? I'm using Vegas4 + DVD right now. Thanks for your help!

I'm using Maxel DVD-Rs and out of 70+ discs I've sent all over the world
only one wouldn't play. And that was in an I-Mac. After upgrading OS X
it played fine. DVD Architect seems fairly compatible to me. You might
try burning at 1x or using some more popular media like Maxell. Just
checking DVDRHELP.com it seems like not many people are using
Fujifilm...

It definitely pays to do back research and use the best possible media.
I've settled on Maxell because its seems like most statistical studies find
them to be the most compatible and I have no reason to believe this to
be not true.

If you use Fujifilm branded media, try to buy the ones that are marked "Made in Japan" which means it's manufactured by Taiyo Yuden. They make quality media.

Fujifilm branded media that is marked "Made in Taiwan" come from other manufacturers and is more of a gamble.

Thats my next step. I just picked up some rytek DVD-r's which are suppsoed to be top of the line so hopefully that will solve my problem. Just one more question... do you burn all your dvd's at 1X?

Might well be media...we only have 3 DVD players here, but everything is checked in all three. High end Sony, Hi-mid level panasonic, and low end Apex. Files play fine in all 3. We use Ritek here, bought in bulk from Mediaright/Gemini Broadcast Supply in SLC

Go to DVDRHelp.com to get info about what media will or will not work in your particular player(s). I've used Memorex +R's which tend to play in every player I've tried.

Also, some players may have a problem with very high bitrates (8000+). Supposedly, burning at slower speeds can also improve playability on some players, because the bits get burned in a little more precisely into the dye.. You may want to also avoid putting labels on the DVDs you burn, since many people claim that over time, they start having problems, possibly because they can make the disk slightly off-balance. It's not so bad problem with CDs, but DVDs seem more sensitive to this.

I've burned many Ritek G04s at 4x, never a problem. The web site www.cdrinfo.com does lots of tests with burners and disks, and any bit-error problems are usually noted. At 4x, the Riteks seem to fall well within the spec.

What version of Vegas+DVDA are you using?

I've had no problems with Verbatim 1X DVD-Rs and Liquid Video 2X (burned at 1X). Some say to always burn at 1X to reduce the possibilities of errors. My burner is a Pioneer A05.

I've played my DVD-Rs on Pioneer and Panasonic DVD players.

I edited two DVDs last year, that have sold a couple of thousand copies over the last five months, with only four or five returns that woudn't play

Unfortunately, these returns were both duplicated and replicated DVDs. Worse still, if a player refused to play a duped DVD, it also refused to play the rep DVD, too, which means it's definitely not a media problem but an encoding issue

One of the issues was simple to solve - although the DVDs were PAL, they were in 5.1 and therefore had AC3 audio which certain players decided meant the DVD was a pirated copy of a Region 1 DVD and so refused to play it! Making these players multi-region/region-free cured the problem

The solution to why the other players have refused to play DVDA authored DVDs has proved impossible to assertain up to now

Obviously, the percentage of copies that won't play is negliable but as we're a new company it still makes us look bad - and we all know a bad reputation can destroy a company whether it's deserved or not...

Hi pmaqs22,

I had the same problem using DVDA1. What I have to do to make my DVD's work is to prepare the DVD in DVDA1 and then use NERO to burn it. If I burn the DVD with DVDA1 it wont work.

I use Verbatim 4x injet printable DVD-R's and DVDA1 & 2 and have absolutely no problem with palyback using VBR. There are some disc brands that will play in some players and not in others. It is totally a mechanical (disc construction) problem. I have not had one returned disc .

The Taiyo Yuden (Fuji 4x) DVD-R can be found in only the 5 packs and the 10 packs, not the spindles.
Ritek G04 DVD-R should be verified with DVD Identifyer, but if you buy from the dealers recommended by others here you wont have to worry about it.
The media can be successfully burned for compatibilty using DVDA 1.0 by selecting 1x, but it will actually burn it at 2x due to an un-addressed flaw in the software (check my previous posts on this issue). They play in every player my customers have tried them in. The Ritek I have been buying always says Ridata on the inside hub if that matters. I use a Pioneer 104 and a Pioneer 105 for burning.
I have tried using Video_TS and Audio _TS files in other programs and they don't recognize them so I use DVDA 1.0 for burning without a problem. You can however use another program to do a disc copy of a disc burned with DVDA, but I haven't done the same level of testing for compatibility going that route as I have with the other route.

John

PS: What is your burner?
