Vegas 5 Capture Problem

Ran into an interesting conflict the other day with the Vegas 5 demo. Here's what happened:

Decided to try the 'improved' Vegas 5 capture engine. Plugged in my camcorder and used my computer to just preview the video. I wasn't even capturing at this point, just watching. Set all my options the same way I did in Vegas 4. After approximately 1 minute of preview, the audio started getting out of synch with the video. It got really out of whack, so I went to move my mouse to stop the preview. Instantly my PC speaker shrieked and wouldn't quit, and my entire system completly locked up. CTRL+ALT+DEL didn't work, I had to manually force a restart. So I rewound my tape, got into Vegas 4 to preview. Now, Vegas 4 preview was losing audio/video sync. Again, no actual capture here, just plain old preview. V4 has always previewed fine before. So I un-installed Vegas 5 demo. Now, Vegas 4 works perfectly. Captures, previews fine.

Is there some sort of bug in the Vegas 5 capture engine? Or could it be a conflict with my hardware? And why would V5 mess up V4? Or is it maybe a bug with the demo version? Just thought I'd post it, in case there was an issue that might need to be resolved.

I haven't experienced Rogueone's capture problem, but I've had other capture problems with Vegas 5. I rarely would experience dropped frames with Vegas 4, but this time it took me about 5 tries to capture a 55 minute tape without dropping frames.

I tried all the usual remedies such as defragmenting, turning off screen savers and power save modes, rebooting, etc. I'm running XP w/service pack 1. I also tried doing a smart preview which disables the audio and video preview while capturing. This resulted in the capture utility crashing after about 45 minutes of capture.

After the crash, I went back to normal preview and finally got a good capture with no frames dropped.

Anyone else experiencing problems with capture in Vegas 5?

You bet! There is definetly something wrong with it, maybe related to the Network rendering add-on. I was up until 4:00 AM recapturing a DVCAM 182 with Vegas 4. Same tape, same PC, no dropped frames or crashes with version 4. I am not pissed off at Vegas 5 because the first releases always have bugs but I won't trust Vegas 5a capture ever again.

Could it somehow be related to hardware? What kind of rigs are you guys running? My system is an Athlon 2500+, 1 GB Crucial PC-2700, Windows XP Pro/SP1, Radeon 9800 Pro, Creative Audigy 2 Platinum. I always capture from my camcorder into the Live drive FireWire port and have no problems.

Rogueone, your last post said you weren't having any problems with capture. Since you started this thread regarding capture problems with Vegas 5, did you stay with V4 now that your problem cleared itself up? I also never had capture problems with V4.

Has anyone posted a problem to Sony with capture problems with V5?

DavidPJ, your assumption is correct. When I saw the problems with capturing in the Vegas 5 demo, I decided not to upgrade and I have stuck with Vegas 4. I've never had any problems capturing with V4, and since I removed V5 there are no problems.

I experience for each capturing a gradual out of synch phenomenon. It is sport games that I capture so at the begining the shots match the sound but at the end of the game the noice of a hit will come a second after the video so it is really a pain. Any reason why it is doing that? I have defragmented my laptop, have lots of memory and disc space, rebooted etc... and still have the problem.

Thanks for any advice...
