Wish list

My wish for one of the updates. I do a lot of work (lots of weddings) using at least 2 camera and sometimes 3. This amounts to a lot of footage and a lot of it is not needed for the final tape or dvd. I would like to dump the tape to Vagas, pull out what I need, then delete the rest of it from the hard drive I may get 6 to 8 hous of tape for one job, but only end up using 60 to 90 mintes. That extra 5 or 6 hours is just taking up space on the dirves, which could be used for something else.

That's sort of like the "Save As" with "Copy and Trim Media" checked.
Your looking for a "Trim Media" without all the "Copying" I take it.
I don't have enough disk space (already got 410GB) to hold the
trimmed version of my 8 hour triple DVD set either.

Lynn,

Don't know what your process is, but I tend to sort through the garbage and rename/organize clips as I go. That'll cut down on some of the space.

If you have the $$$, the best way I've found to work is to have one or two USB (or firewire) external hard drives -- you can get 80G for about $150 now. They work great and come in handy for "extra space." When you'r edone with your project, "Save As" with the "copy trimmed media" box selected, as potatophysics suggests, then backup that new directory.

I have a drive sleeve that I use to swap out internal drives. They're much cheaper, and you can fit a lot of "trimmed" projects on 120G. The sleeves are only about $100, and allow you to juggle onto several "internal" drives that you swap out.

I guess most of my problem is I've been spoiled using my other system. It is a liner/digital system and I could run two decks at the same time. Sync the decks and only pick out what I needed to digitize. I could see both views at the same time. I only loaded the needed clips and if I trimmed them or found I didn't want them, I could delete all un-needed material from the drives - didn't need to stock up on extra 80, 120, or 160 gig drives. I do have plenty of drive space now, but it would easier to not have to store what I don't need.

Then only capture what you need using batch capture. This takes even longer, IMO, because you have to view the media at least once in real time to mark in/out points, then you have to run the desired sections again, per tape. So it's viewing media twice in real time. Once to select, and once to capture. You can walk away and do something else once youa re capturing, but you can do that if you capture the full tape, too.
The Save As/Trim Media is considered by most as the best option, I'm not sure how you'd have it differently done?

Spot hit the nail on the head. Why are you capturing more than you need? Vegas capture supports full manual batch capture. I go through the tape and log IN/OUT points into the Advanced Capture section of Vegas Capture. Then I start the batch capture and work on something else while it runs. On a dual CPU system the capture should go fine in background.

Another option - if you have tons of clips and you aren't using a lot of them.
1) First open your composition.
2) Drop ALL the clips for this project from the explorer view - whether you are using them or not - into the Media Pool (if they aren't already there - I don't know if you have already swept your media pool or not)
3) Then switch the media pool to detailed view
4) Create a bin called "Unused"
5) In the "All Media" bin sort the view by "Use Count" by clicking the column header
6) Select all the files that have a "0" for use count and drag them into the "Unused" bin
Verify that the clips are no longer needed
7) Select all the clips in your Unused bin, right click, Remove from Project and Delete file(s). The files will be deleted from your drive.

Please be careful! Any clip that is not used in your currently opened project will get deleted. I think that is what you are asking...?
