There are hundreds of samples of what people in this forum have one over on the vegasusers.com site. Helps if you have broadband, since the files while not huge are big... its video...

Most of the videos at this site have been removed due to lack of funding.

There are still over 200 of the most recent uploads there, so i think that qualifies as "hundreds". ;)

Also, folks have been much better about playing nicely and not downloading 50 videos at a whack, so i will probably let the count creep up again. And, all the old videos are still available on CD.

Sony should fund this site it only can help promote their product. For the amount of money it will take to further advance storage space it would be a drop in the bucket to Sony's deep pockets. I hope Sony takes a look at Chien's site and employees him!

It's not storage space that is the problem, it's bandwidth. The server's hard drive has enough room for about 6,000 videos just on that partition. Heck, all the material ever uploaded to the site would fit on a single data DVD with plenty of room to spare. The problem is that my internet connection is only fast enough for about 400 viewings per day maximum, and at that no one would be able to get anything from the other sites on my server (not to mention i wouldn't be able to browse anywhere myself). That maximum also assumes that the downloads are spaced out evenly throughout the day. The difficulty i had was that often people would use something like wget to start a download of the entire site and let it run. This meant that suddenly someone was trying to download over 500 videos simultaneously and that just ground the connection to a halt. I wouldn't even be able to ssh in from work to cancel the downloads.

By removing the older videos from the site i at least protect from some of the more massive download attempts. I've also been monitoring much more closely and pre-emptively stopping any apparent wget attempts. So far folks have been much more polite in the last few months and most of the abuse has stopped. *whew*
