Subject:Will Audigy output AC-3 signal thru its optical or coax outputs?

Just wondering - I can't seem to get anything but L & R out of the optical output - no rear or anything else. Can this be done or do you have to use the special digital speakers?

Does the coax output send the full AC-3 signal? I saw someone who said it does, but I don't have the equipment to test at this point.

If it can't be done, will the Audigy 2 support this or do I need to look elsewhere?

Thanks for any help.

Or perhaps I mean will the Audigy output the 5.1 channel mix from Vegas thru the coax or optical outputs so that I can hook it up to a hifi receiver?

I have an Audigy on one of my machines from which I wanted to output untouched AC3 encoded frames into a Dolby professional decoder (for testing). I had to do 2 things to get this to work properly:

1) Open up the Creative Surround Mixer (this is assuming you have all the Creative drivers installed.) Make sure the mixer is in Advanced mode, then select the Speakers tab. Check the "Digital Output Only" checkbox.
2) In the same tab, click the Settings button. Uncheck the "AC-3 decode" checkbox. This disables the Audigy's internal decoder.

Now, you can play an .ac3 file from Creative's Playcenter, and it will be directly routed to the digital port on the Audigy.

Now, I'm not sure if this is what you were asking for in your original post, so correct me if I misinterpreted.

I'm having the same problem. I only hear stereo on my digital out of the audio card. I have tried hundreds of setting combinations and can't get 5.1. I tried what "Sunray" posted and the Audigy files output fine in 5.1 on the spdif. Just can't get Vegas to do it.

I would appreciate any word on what you guys have learned.

Thanks

I think to preview 5.1 out from Vegas thru an Audigy card you have to use ASIO drivers.

You cannot get Vegas to preview ac3 via anything.

You can preview the mix via the analogue outputs. ac3 is an encoded format, the six channels of audio are compressed and encoded into the one stream, there simply isn't enough CPU power to do this in realtime.
