Do you need any special hardware to render 5.1 surround on Vegas 4.0

ive played back the sound w/ surround sound in the room and it doesnt come up right. Do you need any special hrdware like 5.1 sound cards to render surround sound and be able to play it back surround

Vegas renders in 5.1, but you need the AC3 encoder to do it. This can be purchased separately, or with Vegas+DVD. Also, make sure in the options that Vegas is configured for 5.1 surround, and not standard stereo.
