Subject:5.1 on PAL DVDs?

I am considering Vegas 4.0 DVD and tried the demo. Somewhere in the documentation there is caution note that 5.1 may not work on some PAL set-top players. Has anyone any experience with this?
Or should DVDs with 5.1 sound better be done in NTSC (which will also play back on most PAL set tops). I would rather use PAL for the higher resolution.
Any thoughts?

Our european friends have told us that just about every modern PAL player can handle AC-3.
