Subject:Surround Panning & How to monitor the sound

This might be a stupid question, but how would I pan the sound from, let's say, the Right rear Speaker to the Front Left Speaker? I have Vegas 4.0.

Also, how do I monitor the sound for dolby digital 5.1 or should I say "preview" ?

I have a Sony Laptop to work with and I have a PC Pentium III with an Audiophile 2496 sound card.

Do I need to get another sound card that has a special 5.1 capability? Will I have to get a 5.1 speaker package?

Please help!

Thanks!

The sytem you might look at is:
http://www.echoaudio.com/Products/Layla24/index.php with a cardbus adapter for
laptops.

Some say it is best to get the A to D (and D to A) conversions away from the electrically
noisy computer power. I strongly think it is also better to use balanced inputs either
1/4" TSR or XLR.

YOu might try the MOTU 828 sound card with 8 in and 8 out firewire. At home I bought three inexpensive stereo units or monitoring. Check out Dolby website for info on Dolby Digital 5.1 and hook up out of sound card (6 feeds) to these amps LF RF LS RS C AND LFE. Also hook up speakers accordingly as per Dolby instructions: LF RF out of one amp, LS RS OUT OF AMP 2 and C and LFE out of amp 3. Put a subwoofer on the LFE amp out. In Vegas make sure 5.1 Surround is selected by clicking file/properties/audio- then under MASTER BUS MODE select 5.1 surround. Thius brings up a little box with speaker placement next to the track with a little red circle. Moving the red dot anywhere in the field will pan the mono signal and if your speakers are properly adjusted with pink noise (ALA Dolby) you will hear the pan. Double click the box to see a larger box. Read up on automation panning in the manual if you can understand it. Click on the track (turns blue) click insert/Audio envelopes/Surround pan. A new narrow track comes up under the selected track to insert keyframes. Put key frames here at strategic points to pan and play around in the box while the track is playing. A real good understandable manual is needed for Vegas 4. I'm still learning. Theirs leaves a lot to be desired.

Hi - yes you need to be able to output 5 (or 4 if your not concerned with sub bass) discrete channels. You'll need amplification for each channel or powered speakers. I'm not sure if 5.1 soundcards do this in the same way - perhaps - but that's the way it's done in a studio.

M-Audio has the Revolution 7.1 surround sound card for your pc and sence Sonic Foundry has the 5.1 Plug-In-Pack with a EX out its perfect but the only problem with the Sonic Foundry 5.1 Plug-in is thats all it is a 5.1 hopefully thell upgrade to the 6.1 format.

Dolby Digital Surround EX is 5.1 with a matrix rear center.
It does not have a discrete channel in the rear center.
Kind of like how stereo music can have a center channel if encoded right.
This is the way surround sound was done before the digital formats were made. (Matrix Encoding)

dts ES (6.1) and SDDS (8 Channel) have this format, but only on movie prints. (RARE)
SDDS is about to end though and will never be on DVD.
I THINK there are a few DVDs with dts ES 6.1.
However there is no dts ES 6.1 software encoder, just 5.1.
