Subject:any suggested settings for AC-3?

Hi! I am trying to finalize a video project and I was hoping to utilize the AC-3 that came with VV4 and DVD Acrchitect.

My questions are:

Can anyone suggest settings for the render? There are a whole bunch and I am not sure which ones and how to set them.

Can I make sounds go from one channel to another and not just a pan from left to right, but maybe from right rear to left front? If so, how? If not, will I need another program to do this?

Please help.

Thanks!

Surround mixing (what you are asking about) needs to be done in the AC-3 plug-in's host application, either Vegas 4 or ACID 4. Both of these hosts will be able to render AC-3 if the plug-in is installed/registered.

Encoding: Start with the presets and do some evaluations first. Custom settings can be adjusted but there's no magic bullet- your project content will vary, so your encode settings may need to be tweaked for best results. Be scientific about it- changing settings randomly could result in a bad encode...or an encode that won't even play back on a DVD.

Thanks for the response.

Maybe I just don't understand all of this too well. I would like to render the soundtrack as AC-3 5.1. The only template that appears at the render as menu is "Stereo DVD". It will only let me render the tracks as stereo, i.e- left and right only. If I go into custom settings, I find at the top (where the "Stereo DVD" template is) a "5.1 Stereo DVD" template. After switching to the 5.1 template and press okay, I get an error message that reads: "the custom template that you selected is not valid with the current project settings. It has been filtered out of the template list".

If I go back and use the "Stereo DVD" template, and if I go into custom settings and change from 2/0 (l,r) to 3/2 (L,C,R,Ls,Rs), I get the same error message.

I would really like to produce a soundtrack for my video project that produces sound from the left and right rear speakers.

Am I supposed to do something with the tracks to enable them to be rendered as AC-3 5.1? I have soundforge. Do I need to change the tracks in any way to enable them to be rendered as AC-3 5.1?

Also, if I am able to modify tracks to enable them to be rendered in 5.1 AC-3, how would I be able to pan the sound from Right rear to Left front?

Thanks!

Set your Vegas project audio settings to "5.1 Surround".

Create your surround mix in Vegas.

Encode to AC-3 with the "5.1 Surround DVD" render template.
