Start Up Error - Application Could Not Start

Scooter1 wrote on 3/24/2003, 8:19 AM
I'm hoping some can help me with this error message I'm getting.

I've downloaded the demo version of DVD-A 1.0a and Vegas Video 4.0 and installed the programs with no problem. However, when I click on the icon for DVD-A, I get the following message:

'The application could not start.

Please ensure that you have enough free memory and system resources. You may want to try rebooting your computer and re-installing the application.

Error Code: 0x8004e00a, Startup Code: 2.'

When I click on Vegas Video, I have NO PROBLEM.

I've tried everything with getting DVD-A to work. I've closed as many programs running the background through 'Task Manager' in Windows XP. That didn't work...

I've un-installed, rebooted, re-installed, rebooted, and double clicked again with no luck.

I've even tried looking at the registry to see if there may be something goofy with no luck.

I have a 2.4 GHz Dell with 512 Megs of RAM, so I don't know what the problem could be.

To make things even more frustrating, the computer I use at work has demo versions of DVD-A and Vegas Video loaded on it with no troubles. I can open both of the programs with no problems. And my work computer is also a Dell with just about the same configuration except it doesn't have a CD/DVD burner drive like my computer at home does.

If someone could help me, it would be greatly appreciated. I really want to give this program a shot with the home movies I have at home that I want to put on DVD.

Thanks,
Matt

Matt,
A few other users have experienced this problem as well. Althought it appears to be a registry permissions issue, we haven't been able to reproduce the problem in-house. One "fix" that worked for a couple users was to install DVDA as a different user (with admin privileges). Perhaps you'd be able to help us track down the root cause of this startup error?

I have a program that I wrote that worked for all but a few people. It seems it cannot read the registry entries in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE. However, it can read the HKEY_CURRENT_USER entries just fine. In my case, I just duplicated the keys to HKEY_CURRENT_USER and set the program to look there if the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE read blank entries.

While totally unrelated - it sounds like a similar issue.

I had a similar start-up issue when I had network drive letters occupied after my DVD burner. For example:

C: boot disk
D: hp dvd200i
E: Pioneer dvd-rom
F: 2nd hard disk
G: network drive
H: network drive

Whenever G and H were occupied, DVDA would crash on start-up. When I removed G and H, DVDA started up fine. There might be more to this problem, but disconnecting G and H always fixed the problem.

Well, I tried your idea, Sunray...

And sure enough, it worked!!! I'll try to reproduce the steps as best I can.

What I did was
1) Un-install the program on our 'Family' account,
2) Set up a new user account,
3) Logged off of the 'Family' account,
4) Logged in as the new account,
5) Installed the demo under the new account,
6) Double clicked on the icon and it loaded.
7) I exited that and logged off as the new user
8) Then I logged in as the 'Family' account
9) And clicked on the icon for DVD-A and sure enough it worked.

Don't ask me why it worked, but it did.

As a side note, I later deleted the new user account and openned DVD-A again with no troubles.

Well, thanks everyone for their help.

Now I start having some fun and put the movies that I created onto DVD.

The next step is working with Vegas 4.0

Thanks,
Matt

Well, I have the VERY same error.
Just tried the methods discussed here and it doesn't work for me, although strange thing is it works on the new user account I've just created, just not on my main admin account.
I've seen problems like this before on new BlueTooth software were I've had to install onto another user account within XP just to get it to work!
And with the Bluetooth software it was a common problem 12 months ago, but most those software companies must have found the reason for it.

I'm about to give up, I need this on my main account ... so just about to go and try some other software and hope that this is fixed for future users.
I wonder how many customers get this problem and simply give up.
I don't fancy a re-install of XP to try to get it to work.

My system: WinXP pro + SP1, Office 2003. 2.54GHZ P4, 250GB HD raid0

This was with demo version of DVD-A 1.0d (not 1.0a as the first person here also got the same error).
Vegas (demo) seems fine so far, but if I can't make DVD's with this package then I'll have to buy something else!

Can anyone (i.e. Sony/SoundForge) help here?
I'm just about to buy Ulead's software instead since I can't get this to work on two of my PC's now (same issue).
