loading rendering templates

Baluga wrote on 7/4/2002, 9:35 AM
first I thought I couldn't save custom templates because after saving they were not located in any of the dropdown menus.
well after a bit of searching through the registry I found that my custom rendering templates were saved, but they are not loaded into VV 3 so I can't select them. I noticed that in the registry they are located under ...\SonicFoundry\Vegas\2.0\FileTemplates. I have never had version 2.0. there is also a key ...\SonicFoundry\Vegas\3.0\ present but my templates are only located in the 2.0 directory. Can anyone give me a hint on how to load my saved templates?
Thanks in advance!

Jenn,
What version of Vegas 3.0 are you using? Also, what file formats have your tried this with? I.E., is it consistent, or just related to to particular formats?

Finally, after checking into this, Vegas 3.0 does erroneously save and load custom templates from the registry key:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Sonic Foundry\Vegas\2.0\FileTemplateData

Is this the exact key in which you see your custom templates listed?

Thanks,
Peter

Sorry...I should've looked at your earlier posts. You're using Vegas 3.0c, and you mentioned rendering to .avi. Have you tried other rendering formats?

Thanks,
Peter

Thanks so much for your reply Peter. Yes I am using 3.0c and it is consistent across all file formats (avi, mpg, wmv etc). In the registry they are listed under

HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-21-1177238915-1957994488-1708537768-1003\Software\Sonic Foundry\Vegas\2.0\FileTemplateData

as well as

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Sonic Foundry\Vegas\2.0\FileTemplateData

I am logged in as administrator (Win XP). But still the saved templates don't load. Do you have any ideas what I can do to solve this?
Thanks so much.

Our applications such as Vegas 3.0 store templates created from an application under its installation folder. If you are running as a "regular user" under WinXP or Win2K, and the application was installed on a drive formatted as NTFS, then you cannot save files there because by default you don't have permission to write to folders under the "Program Files" folder.

However, since you are running with Administrator permissions you _should_ be able to save and load your templates from Vegas 3.0c. For those reading this thread who are not running with Admin permissions, you will need to change the permissions of the Vegas 3.0 install folder to allow you to write to it. You must run with Administrator permissions to do this. Be sure to check the checkbox that allows child objects to inherit permissions from the parent folder.

The Vegas 2.0 registry location you mention contains the data for settings for the Projects tab, which is specific to Vegas. Even though this location is under Vegas 2.0, it should not affect being able to load templates you've previously created.

The main portion of the template is actually stored as a separate file on disk. The paths to these files are also found in the registry. For the AVI plugin, use regedit to look at the following key:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Sonic Foundry\FileIO\Templates\{EA9D287B-C85A-11D3-BB3A-0050DA1A5B06}

You should see a list of template names and their paths in the right pane of regedit. Check to see if those files actually exist on your hard drive. If they don't then that is likely your problem.

Here's something also to try (you can keep regedit running). Create another custom AVI template from Vegas 3.0c. Be sure to give it a new unique name in the Template: edit box before you click the Save template icon. Activate regedit and hit F5 to update its contents. You should see the new template name and path in the right pane under the key I've given above. The template file should exist on disk in the path listed.

Let us know what you find.

I have solved the problem. Here is what I did:

After your post I looked at the registry entry:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Sonic Foundry\FileIO\Templates

I noticed that all the subkeys did not have any entries in them. Then I looked at the key "DefLocation" which specifies a template directory. This directory did not exist so I knew something was wrong. I tried creating it by hand but I got a "permission denied" message. This was extremely odd since as an "admin" I should be able to create directories wherever I want. So I checked the security settings of the Vegas 3 directory and set them to "full control". After that, I did a "repair installation" just in case and again tried to create a template. This time it worked and the template showed up in the drop-down list straight away. I checked the registry again and low and behold there was the entry in:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Sonic Foundry\FileIO\Templates\{EA9D287B-C85A-11D3-BB3A-0050DA1A5B06}
for the avi template I created. There was also a new file in the "File Template" directory on my disk.

Thanks everyone for their input, I appreciate your time and help a lot.
Maybe this problem can now be entered into the knowledge base for future users?

An extremely happy
Jenn

I'm very happy to hear that you've solved the problem.

I'm wondering why the folder you installed Vegas Video in didn't have permissions set to full control for Administrator. Did you install in a location other than the default C:\Program Files\Sonic Foundry\Vegas 3.0?
Baluga wrote on 7/8/2002, 10:53 AM
No, both the installation folder and the program folder were the default folders as selected by the installation routine. I installed VV 3 logged in as admin too. I have no idea as to why it was different with installing VV3 as other programs install and run without any problems at all in regards to permissions.

Thanks again for all the help :)
